Fees and Registration Information

One of the decisions you are going to need to make is how much you are going to charge, if anything, for your time. It is entirely appropriate for you to include a fee for your preparation time, time in class, training, and teaching experience. Hopefully, this guide will give you a realistic idea of how to value what you charge the kids, the grant foundation, or private companies for your services.

A. Establish the Class Fee
Again, this is your decision. We know folks who write grants and offer the class for free to the kids and donate their time. Most teachers offer the classes for between $25 and $55 per student over the cost of the kit. It is important to remember that the fee includes the kit and 15 hours of your instructional time. Some teachers include a quick, inexpensive afternoon snack, i.e. cookies or gummie worms & juice, with the class. You will need to consider the economics of your area, the value of your time to you, and other variables that are particular to your situation.

Fee/Kid
X15 Kids
Gross $
Cost of Kits
Net Income
$155.00 x15 $2025.00 $1575.00 $750.00/week
$185.00 x15 $2625.00 $1575.00 $1200.00/week

B. Decide Who will Collect and Process Payments
As you are filling out the student registration and class enrollment forms, you will need to decide if the checks are to be made out to you, the school, or the parent group. We would encourage you to have them made out to the parent group first, the school second, and you third.

C. Determine Who Will Accept and Record Registrations
Once you get the forms completed, arrange to have the parent group or school secretary accept registrations. This will save you some headaches, too. Nothing like being in the middle of a math test and having some first grader wander in and hand you his registration to add continuity to your program. If your school has morning announcements over the P.A. system, see if you can get the secretary or principal to remind the kids that registration for the class is closing soon and to get your paperwork in as soon as possible.
